hawk - 2010-02-24

This past Saturday, my friend Matt and I walked around grounds for a while with our cameras. Matt spotted this hawk around the engineering school so we ended up following it around for a couple minutes. I'm not good with identifying birds, trees, etc. So if you know what type of hawk this is, please let me know. I borrowed Matt's 18-105mm lens since I only brought my 50mm with me (which just doesn't cut it for taking photos of birds in trees). Taking photos of this hawk in the trees was the first time I really wished I had a longer zoom lens, which is odd because I usually find myself wanting a wider lens. It was fun watching this bird fly around (a couple of times right towards me). I tend to photograph buildings, small details, chairs, etc., so this was very different since the hawk liked to move around. If only I didn't get scared when the hawk flew right at me, I might have got a couple nice photos out of that. Note to self: get better at taking photos of moving objects.

Camera: NIKON D80
Focal Length: 105 mm
Exposure: 1/200 sec
Aperture: f 6.3
ISO: 400

  • Matt and I decided in a late night debate for the ages, that it is a red-shouldered hawk. native to just about Everywhere, USA.

You know, if we had had this image though, that identification would've been much easier!

  • I should give credit where credit is due. Matt was the first to say red-shouldered. I was convinced for a time that it was red-tailed. With this image I never would've been so fooled.

  • I'm going to have to agree with y'all that it's a red-shouldered hawk. Pretty much beyond a doubt thanks to the great photo. First thing I did was grab my bird guides to figure it out, even before I saw your comments.

Great photo and I hope all's well!

  • This really is a great photo Ben! Don't think I had any from this angle.

  • He's looking very intense - you must have snapped this one when he was watching that squirrel take off across the grass
